Bollywood finds its way on London map

As Bollywood's love affair with London continues with films being shot at various locations there, British film authorities have now unveiled a new map that lists venues where recent blockbusters were shot.

So the next time tourists from India come visiting, they can visit locations where popular films such as Kabhi Khushie Kabhi Gham, Mujhse Dosti Karoge (Starford Station) were shot.

The new movie map is eighth in a series of maps designed to encourage tourists and cinema-lovers alike to discover the Capital through films. More than 40 Hindi films were shot in London last year.

Some of the most popular locations for Indian films have been Trafalgar Square, Natural History Museum, Tower Bridge, The Royal Albert Hall, Millennium Dome, the Houses of Parliament, Nelson's Column and the London Eye.


Some of the better-known films shot at London locations are:

* Southall is home to one of the largest Indian communities in London and was the setting for Kajol's home in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

* Hyde Park was one of one of the locations for a song in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The song culminates with an early morning dance sequence shot at the British Museum.

Several cinemas in London screen Bollywood films, including the Himalaya Palace, Southall; Safarai Cinema, Harrow; Belle-Vue Cinema, Willesden Green, and the Boleyn Cinema, Upton Park. Cineworld Cinemas in Wood Green, Wandsworth and Feltham also have regular Bollywood screenings.

To celebrate the partnership between the Indian and British film industries, the International Film Academy is coming to Yorkshire for a weekend of film premieres, festivals, special events and awards June 7-10.

Shilpa Shetty plans Indian curry house chain in UK

Indian actress Shilpa Shetty, who was bullied and insulted on "Celebrity Big Brother," is to open a chain of Indian curry restaurants in Britain.

Shetty's agent said the flagship of Shilpa Shetty eateries will be in London, and other shops will be located throughout the country.

"Work is moving very swiftly and final details are being drawn up. Shilpa believes her new-found popularity in Britain will guarantee the success of the Shilpa Shetty Dining Hall chain," The Sun quoted Shilpa's agent, Farhath Hussain, as saying.

The 31-year-old actress is also believed to be looking to buy a house in London.

The Bollywood actress hit global headlines after she was intimidated and offended by some of the Big Brother housemates, triggering allegations of racial abuse.

Shilpa's agent also revealed that she had declined a proposal to be in Australia's Celebrity BB, saying: "She has moved on in life and would not like to repeat herself."

Shilpa grabbed more attention recently in India when, during an AIDS awareness appearance, she was kissed by U.S. actor Richard Gere. (ANI)

Aishwarya Rai will live with her in-laws and adopt her husband

Bollywood bride Aishwarya Rai will live with her in-laws and adopt her husband’s family name, her movie icon father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan said in an interview published on Thursday.
The emerald-eyed former Miss World, who wed Bollywood heart-throb Abhishek Bachchan in a traditional Hindu ceremony last Friday, “will live with us,” he told the Times of India.
“This decision came voluntarily from both Abhishek and Aishwarya,” said Amitabh Bachchan, a prolific actor who has a vast international fan base from South Asia to the Middle East and Africa and is known simply as “the Big B”.
Many Indian couples live with their in-laws after their marriage, although an increasing number are setting up home on their own.
Amitabh Bachchan said his new daughter-in-law “desires to use Bachchan as her surname” and had already signed her autograph using that name – the most famous in Bollywood.
The 33-year-old, who won the Miss World title in 1994, will continue her cinema career.
He said he and his wife, Jaya, “have insisted that Aishwarya must continue with her acting career. There is no problem or issue with us.” Amitabh Bachchan’s wife Jaya was a well-known actress who largely retired from cinema after getting married and there had been media speculation that Aishwarya might do the same.

New Delhi: So, another mystery surrounding Ash-Abhi is finally over.

After much speculation about their honeymoon destination, it’s now official that Bollywood’s star couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are headed for a French honeymoon.

The newly-weds would catch an early morning flight on Friday for France and will be spend their time mostly there during their fortnight stay in Europe.

After hogging the limelight for their “private” wedding, the couple remained in news when they visited Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh along with their family and close friends.

It was there that they had their first brush with controversy with devotees complaining in no uncertain terms about the celebrities being meted out VIP treatment at their cost.

The Tirupati Temple board has since banned VIP temple entries.

Tirupati makes VIPs 'equal' for God

Newly-wed couple Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan's celebrity status has been seriously downgraded in the eyes of Lord Venkateshwara.

The actors will be among a host of other VIPs who shall no longer get a special darshan of the lord at Tirupati.

The board governing the temple has decided that there will be no “fast-tracking” for what it terms non-protocol celebrities.

"We have decided that non-government protocol will not be given special treatment," said TTD Executive Officer Ramanat Chatri.

This means all filmstars, business magnates and sportspersons will now be reduced to “mere mortals” like the thousands of others who visit the temple everyday.

So Bachchans, Ambanis, Vijay Mallya, Sachin Tendulkar and others in the pilgrim powerlist will have to fall into line.

And there are more restrictions - no special darshan on Friday, Saturday or Sunday or in the evenings on any other day.

The only good news for celebrities is that the temple authorities will provide security to them. So the new Mrs Bachchan need not worry about getting mobbed.

"She is a celebrity, a former Miss Universe (sic), so we will take care of the security of celebrities,” clarified Chatri.

While some allege inqiury being initiated into the Bachchan family visit to the shrine reeks of politics, devotees are heaving a sigh of relief for not having to wait any longer in serpentine queues for a darshan while celebrities get their way around.

Incidentally, Amitabh Bachcahn is one of the biggest contributors to this temple. Last year alone he donated Rs 51 lakh to the shrine.

So will this decision by temple authorities plug this almost steady flow of cash? Not to worry, says devotees, the Tirumala temple is still the richest in the country.

We've always known Shilpa Shetty is a pretty woman, but now we have an official endorsement from a visibly smitten Richard Gere.

At Seena Taan Ke, an AIDS awareness function organised in Delhi on Sunday to benefit truckdrivers, Gere and Shetty spoke to the vulnerable community about the dangers and misconceptions of AIDS.

Gere, looking more than a trifly dizzy, didn't seem content merely to mention that HIV can't be passed on through a kiss on the cheek -- deciding to make his point by kissing Shilpa's hand, then hugged her, kissed her cheek, and finally bent over the surprised actress to give her a big kiss, Hollywood-style.

While Shetty laughed it off with a poised 'yeh thoda zyaada ho gaya' ('this was a bit much') to the truckdrivers, they seem to have agreed. It is reported that audiences expressed distaste at this behaviour by a visiting celebrity. Some sections of the audience are apparently asking for an apology from both actors.

Bollywood superstar Shilpa Shetty has been in films since she was a teenager, bagging awards and accolades along the way. She's a black belt karate champ and is considered to have the best body in Bollywood. She's a bit worried about the lack of gym facilities in the House.

"I have zero expectations. The only thing I really hope to keep is my self-respect and my dignity."

"I am happy that this has happened because at least now people will talk about the issue of Aids and HIV,"

TIRUPATI: Newly-wed Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai on Sunday sought blessings of Lord Venkateshwara at the famous hill shrine at Tirumala near here.

The Bollywood stars, who entered wedlock on Friday, were in the sanctum sanctorum for about ten minutes, temple sources said.

Abhishek's father Amitabh Bachahan, mother Jaya Bachchan, noted industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife Tina accompanied the couple.

During their stay at the shire, the priests chanted prayers and offered them the celestial ghee lamp arathi the sources said.

Later, chief priest Sri Ramana Dikshithulu showered "divine blessings" upon the couple at the Sri Ranganayaka Mandapa in the temple.

Abhishek and Aishwarya also made some cash offerings in the Hundi (offering Box) situated at Dwarapalas Mandapam close to the shrine, the sources said.
