How pregnant is that pause ?
When you're talking to a lady you know pregnant the pause can be. I'm right now in a very relaxed state of mind. I'm very content with life.

How are things between you and Manav Menon these days?
I'm in love with life.

That isn't quite what I asked.
Let me tell you a joke about Harry and Sally. They share a perfect relationship. They go out for dinners twice a week. Harry goes on Mondays and Fridays. Sally goes out on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Does that answer your question?

You just had a tumultuous time shooting in the West Indies.
Tumultous …no. But definitely titanic. I'm so in love with my director Mudassar Aziz's work. I went to Trinidad thirteen year ago, almost as a child, and now I went as woman. It was one of the many countries I had visited as a Miss Universe. As a state guest of Trinidad I had signed in the log- book along with Mrs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

I believe at times the fan attention got a bit too much?
The Caribbean is warm, in every which way. The people are very friendly. At times like this, having my own space doesn't matter. The people just overwhelm you with their warmth.

Any complaints about the Caribbean cruise?
Sweetheart, my crew didn't give me a single day to cruise. We had Sundays off. But everything is shut on Sundays in Trinidad. I asked my unit to change the off-day. We shot so much on the beaches, they felt like home.

Do you get into a bikini?
I'm sure you'd like the answer to be yes. And it is yes…but with a sarong. On the beach you've to wear a suitable attire. I'm happy to tell you that I'm not wearing a gown on the beach.

I feel Dulha Mil Gaya retains a sense of humour while telling a story. After so many years I finally have a film that I can watch as a member of the audience. I've never played a character like Shimmer. It's my first full-on comedy.

Sushmita: I love Mallika Sherawat

The intrepid Mallika Sherawat has an unlikely supporter in Sushmita Sen.

"I really think she has a lot of spirit and spunk…and tremendous audacity " says Sushmita. "To have come from where she has and to establish her own identity, and to have that kind of spirit couldn't be easy. But she has done it."

Tell her Mallika speaks of Sushmita as some kind of a role-model, and the actress smiles. "Really ? I haven't met Mallika. But the little that I know of her, I like her."

Mallika seems to subscribe to Sushmita's school of thought.

Laughs Sushmita. "I don't know what Mallika's thoughts are. But I feel every role I've played so far has been a stepping stone towards the goal that I've set for myself. To get to a summit you need to climb step by step.

I think I've been climbing the stairs very steadily. Not for a minute did I believe I had to be Madhuri Dixit just because I came into the film industry as Miss Universe. I knew I had to work hard to get there.

Some people get there more easily than others. But that's life. Maybe I've made some major mistakes in my career. And I continue to make them even today. But that's part of the growing experience."

So what keeps Sushmita going….and growing? "The one thing that nourishes me constantly is my selfidentity. I'm very comfortable with who and what I am.

I am an actress only when the camera is switched on. The minute it 's over I go back to being myself. I don't make an effort to make other people comfortable. I feel I can't be an image for people. I have to be a real person. I have to be absolutely me."

Ask her what 'absolutely me' is, and the prompt reply. "Absolutely me, is tons of contradictions. It's being an enigma even to myself at times. It's someone only I knew, and that too once in a while."

Mallika gets thumbs up from Sushmita

Sushmita ready to take on Aishwarya

Sushmita Sen is all set with her ambitious project, Jhansi Ki Rani, based on the life of the legendary Rani Laxmibai, which she wanted boyfriend and ad filmmaker Manav Menon to direct, evethough later, she changed her mind considering a period film a tough task for a new comer to make and approached Dr Chandra Prakash Dwivedi (Pinjar’s director) who politely turned down the offer.

She is leaving no stone unturned in taking the project to the international level and might approach a director from the UK now. Aishwarya Rai playing the same character in Ketan Mehta’s multi-crore projectdoesnt bother her at all!

The film will be produced under Sush’s banner, Tantra Entertainment.

Sushmita’s staff is currently looking for locations in India and abroad. “She may shoot the entire film abroad, as she will get all kinds of facilities.

She is also talking to major actors from the UK for the role of General Hugh Rose The actress-turned-producer has commissioned a team of historians, working round the clock at her Bandra residence, to write the final script.

The film will not focus on Rani Laxmibai’s patriotism but will deal with the motherhood aspect,” says the source.

Sush feels Rani Laxmibai is symbol of strength. She will lay greater emphasis on Rani Laxmibai’s adopted son. That’s probably the facet of the queen’s life that she connects with.
