Deepika's impressive line-up continues!

With some of the senior (not age-wise) heroines, moving on to more mature roles, there is a genuine paucity of leading ladies in Bollywood. Thankfully, the year has seen two promising newcomers, with good histrionic capabilities and stunning screen presence. Obviously we are referring to Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

While the 'Sakina' of SAAWARIYA has bagged a plush role opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Rakeysh Mehra's DILLI 6, her compatriot, 'Shanti' of OM SHANTI OM, has three good projects lined up. And the lady confirms all three.

The first project that she will shoot for (from next month) is Nikhil Advani's CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, opposite Akhshay Kumar. After that it will be the Yash Raj project with Ranbir Kapoor. The third one (in the pipeline) is with the 'Chotey Nawab', Saif Ali Khan.

Way to go Deepika!

Saawariya Vs Om Shanti Om

Two big ambitious projects are ready to hit box-office this festive season. SRK and Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’. Taking a close look at them, one realizes that both are following the same marketing target via different routes.

For ‘Om Shanti Om’, everyone is quite aware of SRK’s shirtless ‘Dard-e-disco’ and flaunting six-pack abs. And For ‘Saawariya’, there is a rumour going round that RK Banner’s next big hope, Ranbir Kapoor, will be seen prancing around in a see-through white towel (how RK-ish, remember all those RK heroines wet and white?).

Both the movies have a new female face and where Sonam Kapoor was forbidden to show her face before SLB gave the green signal, Shah Rukh’s co-star Deepika Padukone’s celebrity face was too well-known to be kept in ‘Purdah’.

both the directors have kept mum about their basic storyline. Only producer SRK and director Farah Khan are so friendly and fun-loving and Bhansali is so brusque and bristly that one tends to put them both in different categories.

Hmmm.. whatever marketing strategies maye be, with Ranbir Kapoor’s butt versus SRK’s shirtless abs, Bollywood Box Office is all ready this festive season for some good fireworks

'Dard-e-Disco is a dumb song'

If you see Dhol and the other all-boys' comedies, you would agree dumbing -down is the order of the Friday.

Nevertheless Javed Akhtar's rhyming scheme in the track Dard-e-disco in Om Shanti Om comes as a bit of a shocker.

The lyric goes, " Dil mein mere hai dard-e-disco…. Phirta hoon main New York, Paris, LA, San Francisco…Dil mein mere hai dard-e-disco…Wohchhod gaya mujhe peechle mahiney ke 26 taarikh ko…Dil Mein mere hai dard-e-disco …

Er…. . It's the time to disco for Javed Saab. After Gulzar's dime-store prattle in Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom it's the the other bard's turn to get verse.

Laughs Javed Saab, "You must understand every song in a film has to go with the given situation and character. The dumbing-down, as you call it, in Dard-e-disco comes from the fact that the guy who sings it, a is a bit of silly goose, not exactly intellectually equipped to sprout poetry.

In the film-within-a-film in Om Shanti Om it's shown that the hero (played by Shah Rukh) insists that an absurd song be composed for him to sing and dance on stage.

While writing lines I had to constantly keep reminding myself that the song wasn't for Shah Rukh but the character that the Star plays in a film within the film. We had to constantly keep checking my poetry to make sure it didn't sound intelligent. Every time I'd come up with a poetic image I'd be shouted down. "

We've had instances of lyricists trying to sound more poetic than they are capable of being. This is the first occasion when a poet actually had to scale down his skills to accommodate the character's intellect.
