It's real-kickass role:Priyanka

Remember those Mata Hari/Catwoman comic-book heroines? Priyanka Chopra harks back to the comic-book heroine of yore in Goldie Behl's Drona.

It's a F-X spectacle done up in the full-on comic-strip mould with Abhishek Bachchan playing a bespectacled nerd in the US.

"And guess what? I play Abhishek's bodyguard. It's a real-kickass role, and a first of its kind since we've never had the leading lady 'protecting' the hero…unless we remember Hemaji in those hunterwalli movies like Jyoti she looked after the hero. "

No wonder Priyanka is often looked on as the new-millennium Hema.

"Really?" Priyanka laughs. "I'm flattered. My entire look in Drona is very virile and aggressive. "

Priyanka learnt a special strain of the martial arts for her unique-dimensional role in Drona. "I had learnt some kung- fu for Don. But this is different. It's a full-on actioner for me, with kicks and somersaults galore. I quite enjoyed the cuts and bruises. "

She agrees her Drona look and body language is unlike anything she has done before. Quite like what stylist Anaita Shroff did with Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2.

"Yeah, we've the same stylist. But my character is more action-oriented. In fact for a change it's the leading lady doing more of the dada-giri than the hero," she laughs.

While she has been staying away from signing new films Priyanka has been doing a lot of ads. "I've been taking the time before my next bunch of assignments making money through ads and live shows. What I do next will have to take me beyond Drona. "

Priyanka: Ugly side of fashion

Before becoming Miss India World and later becoming Miss World 2000 Priyanka had walked the ramp as a model and that made her a great choice for Madhur Bhandarkar's next project that dwells on the darker side of a career in modeling.

The film titled, ‘Fashion Show: The Ugly Side of Beautiful People’, is being bankrolled by UTV with whom Priyanka recently signed a three-film contract worth Rs.4 to 5 crore. Also in the film is Kangana Ranaut, who has the looks and demeanor of a model and with whom UTV has a similar three film contract.

Under the UTV contract both Priyanka and Kangana enjoy artistic freedom and the two decided to sign up only because they felt the roles suited them well. Many supermodels are also expected to feature in the film though Priyanka Chopra will play the lead.

Madhur Bhandarkar, who has so far done low budget critically acclaimed films like ‘Chandni Bar’, ‘Page 3’, ‘Corporate’ and ‘Traffic Signal’ in the recent past, is venturing into the big league with Fashion which is budgeted at Rs 20 crore.

Madhur has yet to finish the first screen play and is understandably reluctant to talk about the cast or the roles. The film is expected to hit the floors on September 15 and lavish runways are being erected at Nitin Desai's Studios in Karjat.

Rohit Bal has been signed up as the fashion consultant for the film and will also make a special appearance in the film.

It's party time for Priyanka!!!

There's much reason for happiness in Priyanka's place. This week both Priyanka and her brother Siddharth turn a year older.

Laughs Priyanka, "Yes, it's party time for us. My kid-brother Siddharth celebrates his birthday on 12 July while my birthday is six days later on the 18th."

So a joint celebration for the Chopra siblings?

"I'd love to," exults the doting Didi. "But Siddharth is turning 18 and he wants to bring in his birthday in a big way with his friends. So Siddharth will have a big party of his own."

The surprise bash at the Chopras' would be the one Priyanka is planning on her own birthday for the first time.

"That's true.I've never had any kind of party ever since I came into this industry. Friends keep teasing me about it. I'm not a party person. Believe it or not, I'm shy of crowds. Also, the past few years have hardly given me reason to feel like celebrating," Priyanka's voice gets distant as she recalls her father's serious illness.

Perking up she says, "Yeah I'm having a birthday party for the first time. Not a huge one. Just 40-50 close friends and family. That's all."

Getting reflective she says, "I can't believe how much time has passed. I'm suddenly feeling old! Seriously. Professionally I've no reason to complain. At home we've gone through some turbulent times. Hopefully we're out of it."

Priyanka Chopra: A new Powerpuff girl!

Priyanka Chopra is out for some kick-butt action. We saw some of her cool moves in Don and Krrish and now comes Drona. In her latest film Drona, which is also a super hero flick like Krrish, she plays the role of a protector to Abhishek Bachchan. It does sound odd as we have rarely seen women in Hindi films play daring characters on the silver screen.
Priyanka is bringing yet another change moving from the typical sweet and sexy roles that women get to essay to a very action packed role in this new movie. To add originality to her performance she went under training for martial arts to get the stunts right and from the looks of it she seems to be totally enjoying it.
When asked about the nature of the martial arts she says,"It's called 'katka'; it's a Sikh form of martial art where you fight with swords and with a defense mechanism which is very rooted. It looks quite spectacular." Way to go Priyanka!

Chatting with Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra

With a three-film deal with UTV and a quickly growing career graph, oomph princess Priyanka Chopra is well on her way to Bollywood success. Last seen in the multi-star Salaam-E- Ishq, she’s working with the best of the industry and is easily one of the most sought-after actresses in tinsel town. Excerpts from a freewheeling chat with Priyanka on her new films, her personal views and a lot more:

After Salaam-E-Ishq, what films are in the pipeline? What roles do you play in these films?
I finished shooting for God Tussi Great Ho with Salman Khan and it’s up for release sometime this July or August. I am currently shooting for Love Story 2050. It’s a sci-fi film which revolves around Mumbai in the year 2050. It’s quite exciting as it’s a futuristic film and has got a very cool look. Then there’s Drona, in which I play Abhishek Bachchan’s bodyguard. It’s a very interesting film...something like a fantasy film.

You have signed a three-movie deal with UTV. Give us some details on these films…
It’s too early to comment on the kind of films and directors. There are a whole lot of directors I want to work with and kinds of movies I want to do. We are in talks now and I will let my fans know as soon as we finalize something.

What kinds of scripts interest you?
Any script that is challenging and is not a cliché. I want to do different kinds of roles and something that gives me a chance to prove myself as a versatile actress.

What would you have been if you weren’t an actress?
To tell you the truth, I got into acting by chance. I was studying to become an engineer and my mum sent my pictures for the Miss India pageant. I had no idea I was going to win and just like any other teenager, I wanted to skip my pre-boards and go for some fun. But then I won and also bagged the Miss World crown. There’s been no looking back since. I got into acting by sheer coincidence. Someone up there helped me find my vocation.

Tell us something about your childhood…
I was a very normal kid. My childhood was just like any other child’s…fun, studies, play and so on.

What is the one thing you love about Bollywood and one thing you hate about it?

There is nothing I hate about Bollywood. I love the industry and every bit of it. The best thing about it is that when there is a need, the entire industry unites and helps you out no matter who you are. They are extremely supportive and loving.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I’ve been in the industry for only four years and have a long way to go. It is too early to say what I will be doing 10 years from now. I’ll wait to see what’s in store for me.

Have you thought of going behind the camera and making your own film?
Not yet. I have a lot to learn before I think beyond acting.

So who are your favorite actor and actress?
It’s very hard to single one actress out. There are so many of them. I love Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi…the list is endless. My favorite actor is Shahrukh Khan.

Of all the films you have done, which one do you consider your best performance?

All the roles I have done are special to me and they were challenging. I look back fondly at all my roles, right from my first movie Andaaz to Aitraaz to Krrish.

Tell us about your beauty and fitness regime…
I do not exercise or go to the gym but thanks to the songs and dances in Hindi films, I get to work out there and then. I love food and Indian and Thai are my favorites. I never compromise when it comes to eating but make sure I include a lot of greens in my diet. I don’t take to crash dieting and would advise everyone to refrain from unhealthy eating habits.

What do you do in your free time?

I adore watching movies; movie marathons are my favorite pastime. I can watch up to five movies back to back. I also love music and like reading whenever I get the time.

What about marriage?
I thoroughly believe in the institution of marriage, but there’s still a long way to go before I get married. Right now I want to concentrate on my career

What is your dream role?
I have always wanted to work in a period film.

Rocking to the tunes of Priyanka

It was the turn of the Caribbean to dance to the tunes of Priyanka.

Actors Suniel Shetty and Priyanka Chopra accompanied music director Anand Raaj Anand for a show recently to the Caribbean, Trinidad to be more precise and also Surinam. The crowd literally danced to tune of Bollywood.

Priyanka was just superb. She conquered Caribbean and Surinam.

"The people there went crazy with the foot-tapping Bollywood numbers. We had a crowd of about ten thousand odd people and that too, in a small auditorium. We weren''t expecting it go houseful. It was a great success and the organisers wished they had done it on a larger scale," says Suniel. He grooved to his old hits Jhanjhariya and songs from Dhadkan while Priyanka rocked the house with her songs from Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and more.
